For most residential concrete slabs, use number 4 rebar on a grid spaced 12 to 18 inches apart, sitting in the middle of the slab thickness. That grid controls cracking and holds the slab together if the ground shifts. Concrete is strong in compression but weak in tension. Pour a slab with no steel and the first time the subgrade settles or a heavy load rolls across it, it cracks and the two halves go their separate ways. Rebar doesn’t stop concrete from cracking entirely, but it holds the crack tight so the slab keeps acting like one piece. That’s the whole job of the grid.

What size rebar for a slab

Rebar is sized by eighths of an inch, so number 3 is 3/8 inch, number 4 is 4/8 (half inch), and number 5 is 5/8 inch. For flatwork the size follows the thickness and the load.

Number 4 is the workhorse for residential slabs. It’s stiff enough to hold a grid without sagging between chairs, easy to bend and tie, and priced right. Step up to number 5 only when you’re carrying real weight, like a shop floor with equipment or a thickened edge under a bearing wall. Rebar spacing for a slab

Rebar grid spacing is the distance between parallel bars, center to center, and it runs both directions to form a grid. Tighter spacing means more steel and better crack control. For most home slabs, 16 inches on center is a solid default, 12 inches for driveways and anything carrying vehicles, and 18 inches is about as wide as I’ll go on a light-duty patio.

The rule I follow on placement: keep the grid in the middle third of the slab thickness, and hold bars at least 3 inches back from any edge that touches soil. Steel too close to the surface or the dirt rusts and spalls. Set the grid on rebar chairs or dobies so it stays put during the pour. Never lay bar on the ground and “hook it up” as you pour, because it always ends up sitting on the bottom where it does almost nothing.

Overlap bars at the splices by at least 12 inches, or 40 times the bar diameter to be exact, and tie them with wire so the grid moves as a unit.

Estimating how much rebar you need

Here’s the field method for a rectangular slab. Take the length and width in feet, and your spacing in feet (16 inches is 1.33 ft, 12 inches is 1.0 ft).

  • Bars running one way: divide the width by the spacing, add 1, and each bar is as long as the slab.
  • Bars running the other way: divide the length by the spacing, add 1, and each bar is as long as the width.
  • Add both totals for the linear feet of steel, then add about 10 percent for splice overlaps.

Example on a 20 by 24 ft slab at 16-inch spacing: across the 20 ft width you get 24 / 1.33 + 1 = about 19 bars at 24 ft each = 456 ft. The other direction, 20 / 1.33 + 1 = about 16 bars at 20 ft each = 320 ft. That’s 776 ft, plus 10 percent for laps, so order around 855 linear feet. Do you always need rebar?

Not always. A small 4-inch sidewalk or a garden pad can get by with welded wire mesh or even fiber-reinforced mix. But anything carrying a vehicle, anything over about 100 square feet, or any slab on questionable ground earns a real rebar grid. When in doubt, put the steel in.
